My New Consulting Business

A couple of years ago I did this free thinking session trying to figure out what I love and what I excel at where the ultimate goal was to figure out what my dream job would be. At the end of that 3 hours I "discovered" my dream job is helping people start businesses.

Since then I've started 2 businesses for Team Fykes. However, two years later I accidentally got to do it for someone else and turns out I do love it and I'm fairly proficient at it.

My trip to New York City turned into a business consultation and business start up planning. It wasn't exactly the trip I had planned but honestly I really didn't have anything planned so why not help one of my best friends start a business?

I do need to work on the fee structure I charge but honestly I'm pretty excited about my payment.

The New York Firsts

• We have friends that live there
• We cooked 3 or 4 meals while visiting
• We stayed at 3 different hotels and one home during the visit
• It snowed 8 inches
• I went to a designer sample sale and actually bought something
• Found out I do not like light art
• We didn't see a show
• Joshua walked the Brooklyn Bridge
• Went to All Angels Episcopal Church

But I Looked Good Doing It

While we began to prepare for our New York City trip I was faced with the reality that my shoe selection had degenerated into things mostly of the canvas variety. I have a few dress shoes but those sure aren't going to help me in the possibly freezing weather of the city. Armed with the Christmas money from my grandmother I decided to rectify that situation.

These are my new boots.

I have tested out the warmth and they get an A+ rating on that. I also wore them to my shoot last night to test their longevity and I'm going to have to go with a solid B rating there. They were fine at the beginning but I'd say about 6 hours in I was beginning to dread having to walk somewhere to move a cable or give notes to an actor. My logical brain said to pack something of the canvas variety for the early morning hours but I chose to live like a girl and not pack a "sensible" option.

My feet are still a little sore almost 12 hours after I have taken them off but I don't really know many shoes with a heel that can stand up to a 10 hour production day. I am looking forward to my Rocket Dogs for tomorrow's shoot but the purchase does makes me feel a little more "grown up" and with the boots over my skinny jeans I can totally pass as a fashionable person.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about fashion. I know you look at me and you think - she never thinks about fashion but that wouldn't be true. I'm very aware of styles but I just can't seem to make myself spend the money that fashion requires (although I wish I could).

I'm heading to New York in late February and that makes me think about my first trip in 2001. I was one week away from September 11 so that trip could have been something completely different but luckily it will be remembered for Sex and the City and and rolled jeans. This style was all over the streets.

I loved it and so when I got back to Austin I started rolling up my jeans. I got SOOOOO much flack for that move. People asked me constantly if I was waiting for a flood and then there was just the usual "are you going like that?" I would tell them "oh you just wait - you'll be wearing your pants like this real soon."

I waited.

I left Austin in 2003 and that style still hadn't hit mainstream, but by 2004 or 2005 it was everywhere. THREE YEARS!

My question is, why does it take so long for fashion to trend down to the rest of the country? Austin is a pretty forward thinking place so I wouldn't think they would be far down the list.  Are they testing to see if it works in New York and LA before the major advertisers and retailers start showing that kind of fashion?

I seriously have no idea but I do look forward to walking around the City getting a look at 2012.
